The ACT Eden Monaro Cancer Support Group raises funds to provide financial assistance to families who have a member undergoing treatment for cancer. All donations made go directly to family assistance and none is used in administration of the group. All money raised stays in the local area to assist local families. The Cancer Support Group is currently supporting 1300 families in this region who have a family member suffering from cancer. The ACT Cross Country Club encourages all participants to make a donation to the ACT Eden Monaro Cancer Support Group when entering and to arrange either sponsorship or support for this worthwhile local charity. Why run Canberra?
The Canberra Half Marathon is an event organised by runners for runners that will celebrate it's 40th Half Marathon on 17th May.
Canberra is a great place to visit and get around. Most of the negative publicity and hype can be attributed to those who visit the big house on the hill for just 18 weeks or so per year and never take the time to look around or get outside the Parliament. Another big myth is the weather. Of course our weather is a bit cooler than the major capital cities in autumn/winter but so are all Australian places that are at 600m altitude. We would like you and your family to come to Canberra for a great weekend. There is so much to see and do and many of the attractions are free or very cheap. Visit the Canberra Tourism website www.visitcanberra.com.au and see for yourselves. Canberra has plenty of accommodation of all types and price ranges and is well serviced by all the major airlines including budget airlines Tiger and Virgin Blue with direct flights from most Capital Cities. For details about Canberra and the surrounding region and or accommodation bookings please visit Australian Capital Tourism at www.visitcanberra.com.au or email visitcanberra@act.gov.au Free Call 1300 554 114. Accommodation Free Call 1300 733 228.

Canberra Half Marathon History The First Annual Rex Foulkes Memorial Half Marathon started at 2pm on Sunday 13th September 1970. The organising committee comprised Peter McCullagh, Rod Calvert and Jack Pennington. Others helping out on the day were Daryl Cross, Joan Cross and Len Dowen. The first three placegetters were Julian Scott 69.56; Terry McGee 70.30, and Dave McInnes 71.07. The great Dave Power came 6th in this race. Others from the Canberra area who participated that day and are still active within the sport are Graeme Small, Geoff Moore, Pat Fisher and Alan Wilson. Rex Foulkes had been in Australia 5 years at the time of his death. He was very fond of Canberra and its runners and was a member of the North Canberra Athletic Club. His love of athletics and particularly distance running was so great that in the last 12 months of his life he covered 24,000 miles (approximately 38,000k) in search of competition. Between 1965 and 1970 he had twice recorded 2 hours 27 minutes for the marathon. He was acknowledged as the most travelled runner in Harrier circles and this was his undoing. On 1 March 1970 Rex said ‘See you next week mates' and was killed in a car accident on the way home to Cooma. In England Rex was a member of the ‘Vale of Aylesbury and Walton Athletic Club' I know until about 1990 there was a Rex Foulkes Memorial Race held in England. Rex lived by the following code during his athletic career ‘The important thing is not to win but to take part' |
