| Untitled document MEDIA RELEASE 5 February 2010 Canberra Road Running Festival The ACT Cross Country Club announced today that it will be conducting a weekend of running in May this year to be known as the Canberra Road Running Festival. Club President, Doug Limbrick, said in announcing the Festival: “This is an exciting addition to the Canberra running calendar incorporating an event for children, an event for fun runners and several events for the more serious distance runners” Doug Limbrick also said that he was very pleased to also announce that champion marathoner Robert de Castella has agreed to be the patron of the Canberra Road Running Festival. “In addition to being the patron Deek’s advice and support will be invaluable in ensuring that this inaugural Road Running Festival is a great success” Limbrick said. The Canberra Road Running Festival will be conducted on Saturday and Sunday 1st and 2nd May 2010 and will incorporate: - a 2k Mini Jog for children under 10 years of age;
- a 5k Fun Run;
- a Half Marathon (41st Rex Foulkes Half Marathon)
- a Marathon (to be known as the National Capital Marathon);
- an Ultra 50k event; and
- a Runners Expo.
The Mini Jog and Fun run will be conducted on Saturday 1st May with the other events taking place on Sunday 2nd May. The marathon and half marathon will respectively incorporate the ACT marathon and half marathon championships. In commenting on the Running Festival Deek said: “Canberra and the Cross Country Club have a long and great tradition in organising and delivering spectacular running events, and this year’s Canberra Road Running Festival will provide runners of all ages and abilities with a host of events to test their fitness, set PB’s and have a heap of fun. I’m thrilled to support the event and am looking forward to being there to encourage all the runners to have a great time and achieve their goals.” The ACT Cross Country Club has had both a full marathon and half marathon on its annual club program for many years. Both these events have been conducted in autumn which usually provides ideal weather for distance running. The Canberra Marathon (usually held in April) will not be conducted this year because the conditions for approval by the ACT Government, set by the Chief Minister last year and announced publicly on 4th February, have not been met. In the absence of this event the ACT Cross Country Club has taken the opportunity to look creatively at providing a number of events over a weekend to meet the needs of a range of runners from Canberra and other parts of Australia. Further details can be found on www.canberrarunner.com.au/festival including information about how to enter electronically or by using the paper entry form. The site also has maps of the course for the distance events. Doug Limbrick President ACTCCC 02-62868187 or 0413 430 256 |
