The Program

The ACT Cross Country Club (CCC) is conducting a half marathon training group to prepare participants for the Instant Colour Press Canberra Half Marathon on Sunday 18 May. It is aimed at novices – those runners and joggers who have not completed this distance before and are attracted by the challenge! This will be the fifth year of the program which has nurtured over 150 runners to their first half marathon..

The program will start on 23 February and finish with a celebratory recovery run on 20 May. Group training will take place on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings at various venues around Canberra. Members will also be encouraged to participate in the CCC events where possible as part of their training. Any additional training suggested will need to be undertaken by participants in their own time.

A brief information session will be held at 6pm on Wednesday 13 February at the Yamba Sports Club, Irving St Phillip. The full program for the Group will be available on that day with the first run scheduled for 7am on Saturday 23 February at Lennox Gardens.

Experienced runners with many marathons and half marathons behind them will run/jog with participants at each group session. Specialist sessions on stretching, nutrition, clothing and footwear will be held on week-day evenings during the Program.

The CCC recommends that prospective participants seek appropriate medical advice before undertaking this exercise program. Further, because of the requirement to run the half marathon on hard surfaces, the CCC will only accept entries from people who are at least 18 years old.

The Benefits

The following benefits will be available to participants:

  • 12 weeks of training in a group which makes it much easier to complete the longer runs;
  • advice from experienced runners on all aspects of completing a half marathon;
  • CCC membership which entitles members to free entry to all its events (other than the half marathon, Women and Girls’ Fun Run and Brindabella Classic) and the quarterly journal Canberra Runner, through to 31 December 2008;
  • entry to the ICP Canberra Half Marathon;
  • entry in a team to the Weston Creek Half marathon on Sunday March 9 (2 or 3 team members to combine to complete the whole distance);
  • a Half Marathon Training Group long sleeved Tshirt or similar;
  • a pre-race carbo loading pasta dinner; and
  • specialist sessions on stretching, nutrition, clothing and footwear.
